A fairy tale picture-perfect castle perfectly ensconced in the pretty village of Nunney, a few miles outside of Frome. This medieval castle of four corner towers encircled by a picturesque moat was built in the 1370s by local knight Sir John de la Mare, whose effigy can still be seen in the village church. The poor defensive position of the tower left it vulnerable to attack, and so after heavy cannon fire it was abandoned to the Parliamentarians in the English Civil War. The rear wall collapsed completely in the Victorian period. Today the castle is the ideal setting for a romantic picnic reclining on a blanket by the moat, or for a game of medieval hide and seek. All Saints Church is well worth exploring too, located just opposite the castle on Church Street.
